Introduction

Virtualization is the creation of a virtual version of something, such as an operating system, a server, a storage device or network resources. Virtualization is a broad term that refers to the abstraction of computer resources. Virtualization hides the physical characteristics of computing resources from their users. This includes making a single physical resource (such as a server, an operating system, an application, or storage device) appear to function as multiple virtual resources; it can also include making multiple physical resources (such as storage devices or servers) appear as a single virtual resource.

History

Many think of virtualization as a new technology that was developed only recently, when in fact, virtualization was first invented in the 1960s. What purpose could such an advanced technology serve over forty years ago? Virtualization was originally invented and implemented to divide up the huge mainframe computers that existed in order to achieve more efficient hardware utilization.
IBM applied virtualization to their computers over 30 years ago for this very purpose. Optimal mainframe efficiency was important and by implementing virtualization, better use could be made of what used to be a serious financial investment. When IBM invested a lot of time and effort in developing robust time-sharing solutions. Time-sharing refers to the shared usage of computer resources among a large group of users, aiming to increase the efficiency of both the users and the expensive computer resources they share. This model represented a major breakthrough in computer technology: the cost of providing computing capability dropped considerably and it became possible for organizations, and even individuals, to use a computer without actually owning one. Similar reasons are driving virtualization for industry standard computing today: the capacity in a single server is so large that it is almost impossible for most workloads to effectively use it. The best way to improve resource utilization, and at the same time simplify data center management and the cost effective, is through virtualization.

VMware introduced virtualization

X86(32 bits) systems in 1999 as physical infrastructure costs increased end user desktop maintenance skyrocketed, and insufficient disaster recovery became a major concern. However, x86 machines were not built to handle full virtualization.
VMware was able to successfully address this problem with an adaptive virtualization technique, resulting in virtual machines that match host hardware and sustain complete software compatibility

Virtualization Today

Studies show that 35% of the respondents have invested money in data virtualization, 27% of the respondents have partially deployed the software and 18% have it fully deployed. Furthermore, almost one-third of the organizations have data virtualization under consideration.

These numbers are comparable to the ones coming from a TDWI (The Data Warehousing Institute) study. This study indicates that 19% of the organizations have data virtualization currently in use and 31% have plans to implement data virtualization. In July 2012, Ted Friedman of Gartner indicated that approximately 27% of the respondents of a study indicated that they were actively involved in or had plans for virtualized views of data. Ventana Research indicated in an April 2012 study that data virtualization is an advancing priority in information management: 12% have completed data virtualization projects, 11% have initiated projects and 20% have planned a project in which data virtualization will be used. Finally, in a 2012 study, Forrester Research predicted that the total software revenue (licenses, maintenance and services) for data virtualization has grown to $8 billion by 2014. Data centres today use virtualization techniques to make abstraction of the physical hardware, create large aggregated pools of logical resources consisting of CPUs, memory, disks, file storage, applications, networking, and offer those resources to users or customers in the form of active, accessible, associated virtual machines. Even though the technology and use cases have evolved, the core meaning of virtualization remains the same: to enable a computing environment to run multiple independent systems at the same time.

Experts believe that virtualization is moving toward a software-based infrastructure that sees virtually every layer of the data centre virtualized and managed by hypervisors. In this environment, those components will be delivered as a service and automated by software that enables businesses to be more flexible, agile and responsive to IT demands. Projections such as these are always questionable, but one thing’s for sure — the future of virtualization is very bright. Virtualization is already making a huge impact in Information Technology, with the 2014 seeing dramatically increased use cause of fast, power consumption, reliable, cost effective and particularly in data centre networks. And while virtualization may have its share of issues, such as extra network loads that can impact performance and response times, the technology is poised to grow even more in 2015.
A recent report on server virtualization from Infonetics Research states that 75% of surveyed companies are now in the process of virtualizing in the`1 interests of improved application performance. The report predicts that by 2015:
  • More than half of data centre servers will be virtualized
  • The number of virtual machines (VM)  per server will reach 30
Potential solutions for anticipated network problems from virtualization are already being designed to combat issues such as VM migration and planned network events, which can stall data by consuming significant bandwidth. Some data centres are implementing hybrid packet-optical circuit-switched networks, which overlay existing Ethernet and offload traffic while providing a high-speed, low-latency data lane for planned events.

A Brief History about Sponsor

The sponsor, TAFE NSW has been Australia's leading public vocational education and training provider for more than 100 years. TAFE NSW evolved directly from the community. It has grown into the organization it is today by responding to, and pre-empting, community needs.
First represented by the apprenticeship system, which had become prominent in the 1800s because of a need to train unskilled convicts for a life in a new society, 'technical' education can be traced back to the Sydney Mechanics' School of Arts, 1833. Although firmly established before Australia's first university (the University of Sydney, opened in 1850), the Sydney Mechanics' School of Arts didn't run a recognized 'technical' class until 1865 when it offered Mechanical Drawing.
Through the middle of the nineteenth century, the Sydney Mechanics' School of Arts balanced its courses: popular music and dancing were offered, as were geometry and architectural drawing; public lectures were delivered as well as classes. Even from the early days the deliverers of technical education in NSW took the view that education should not only strengthen job prospects – it should enrich society.
Although essentially a private concern, technical education in NSW responded to community demand appealing to those members of the public who were interested in science and art for interest's sake, as well as those who were interested in what was to become known as vocational training. As technical education in NSW evolved, institutions such as the Orphans' Schools and the Female School of Industry came and went all contributing components.

In 1878, the Committee of the School of Arts made what was to prove to be an auspicious decision it formed the Sydney Mechanics' School of Arts Working Men's College. Sensibly referred to as Sydney Technical College, it occupied premises in Pitt, Sussex and Castlereagh Streets, and although it didn't train apprentices, it became the hub of activity for technical training.
TAFE NSW is known for the training and skill institution. TAFE has got a lot of branches in all over Australia and TAFE NSW has got more students than others and it is the best one in Sydney. TAFE NSW is the most valuable governmental training institution.
TAFE NSW has got so many students that they need numbers of host computers as they give training to the engineering, nursing, accounting, Networking, music, arts and IT students. Day by day they are getting enrolled so many students that if they will going to setup physical computer then they have to pay so high and they will be so many problems for troubleshoot and for the space. They need space for the students and for the different labs or for the computer. Also they have to pay high electricity bill. If they need high configured pc then they have to pay so high that the sponsors have to spend a lot. But if they will use the virtualization system then it will minimize that all expenses like power, maintenance and space. Due to the virtualization students can get virtual computer speed, reliable and computers with no hardware problems.

Where TAFE stand in comparison to other similar institution

TAFE (Department of Education )
Other Colleges (Cambridge International College, Taylors College and Holmes Institute, i.e.)
  • TAFE is leading government owned institute.
  • TAFE gives vocational, training and specific   courses.
  • TAFE is cheaper compare to other colleges and institutes.
  • It has got world class labs and they give more practical based education
  • TAFE trains the students so that they don’t need any help for the employment and there is student association in college being member of that they help to make resume and train for the interview.
  • TAFE is so huge that there are lots of branch all over the Australia and students can benefit the same label of education in any TAFE
 Other colleges are private institute
whereas the private colleges focus on the specific courses
Private colleges and institutes are more expensive
They have labs but they focus on more theory based education
Private collages benefits students as the classes tent to be smaller and usually help students to find employment after the course
Some private institutes are huge but most of them have college in one place and students need to visit to study in particular colleges

The Network Solution implement virtualization which can helps TAFE to reduce the infrastructure costs, operating costs, but also to optimize the use of our computing capacity

Different options for virtualization

  • Red hat enterprise Linux (REHL)

Is a Linux-based operating system from Red Hat designed for businesses. RHEL can work on desktops, on servers, in hypervisors or in the cloud. Red Hat and its community-supported counterpart, Fedora, are among the most widely used Linux distributions in the world.
Being a Linux distribution, Red Hat Enterprise Linux contains the Linux kernel as well as some applications for performing certain tasks. Like all Linux distributions, RHEL is open source. Thus, people can view its source code, download it and make their own customized versions.
Some of the notable Linux distros that are actually derived from RHEL include CentOS, Oracle Enterprise Linux, Scientific Linux and Pie Box Enterprise Linux.
In the past, Red Hat gave this enterprise product for free and only charged for support. Later on, they decided to create two versions: RHEL, which would have less frequent version releases and consequently be more stable, and Fedora, which would undergo relatively more frequent version releases and consequently offer more bleeding edge technologies.
  • VM ware VSphere 4

Is VMware Inc.'s flagship server virtualization suite and consists of several technologies that provide live migration, disaster recovery protection, power management and automatic resource balancing for data centres.
In this article, you'll learn about the ESX and ESXi versions of VMware vSphere 4, licensing tiers, how vSphere 4 can be used as a platform for private cloud computing and more. Vsphere is the successor to the VMware Infrastructure 3 (VI3) product line but was rebranded as vSphere 4 with the release of ESX 4.0 hypervisor.
The ESX architecture consists mainly of the service console, which runs on VMware's VMkernel hypervisor code. Measuring approximately 8 GB, the service console is a privileged VM that runs an optimized version of Red Hat Linux OS. It contains drivers, services, processes and utilities for VMkernel management. User can log in to the service console though a secure shell client to run scripts, view logs and install applications. It also serves as a hub to troubleshoot virtual environment problems. Ultimately, ESX has a limited future compared with ESXi, and VMware itself has stated that it views ESXi as its next generation hypervisor.
  • Oracle VM

Virtualization presents new dynamic dependencies – between physical machines and virtual machines (VMs) and between VMs. These dependencies make it quite complicated to monitor and manage virtualized infrastructures to ensure service performance and business continuity. For virtualization initiatives to be successful, it is critical that end-users see the same or better performance from virtual infrastructures as they had experienced with physical infrastructures.

The EG Monitor for Oracle VM correlates performance across the entire infrastructure, including Oracle VM Server for x86, guest VMs, and Oracle Linux. Automatic virtualization-aware root-cause diagnosis enables administrators to rapidly identify bottlenecks and to right-size their infrastructure for peak performance. Join us for this webinar to learn how you can attain 360-degree visibility and pre-emptively detect and fix the root-cause of performance bottlenecks.

  • Microsoft server 2008 (Hyper-V)

Implements isolation of virtual machines in terms of a partition. A partition is a logical unit of isolation, supported by the hypervisor, in which each guest operating system executes. A hypervisor instance has to have at least one parent partition, running a supported version of Windows Server (2008 and later). The virtualization stack runs in the parent partition and has direct access to the hardware devices. The parent partition then creates the child partitions which host the guest OSs. A parent partition creates child partitions using the hyper call API, which is the application programming interface exposed by Hyper-V.
VMware ESXi was originally a compact version of VMware ESX that allowed for a smaller 32 MB disk footprint on the Host. With a simple configuration console for mostly network configuration and remote based VMware Infrastructure Client Interface, this allows for more resources to be dedicated to the Guest environments.
There are two variations of ESXi, VMware ESXi Installable and VMware ESXi Embedded Edition. The same installation media will install to either one or the other of these installation modes depending on the size of the target media. It has the ability to upgrade to VMware Infrastructure or VMware vSphere 4.0 ESXi.
Originally named VMware ESX Server ESXi edition, through several revisions the product finally became VMware ESXi 3. New editions then followed: ESXi 3.5, ESXi 4 and now ESXi 5.
To virtualize Windows 8 or Windows Server 2012 as guest operating systems, the ESXi version must be 5.0 update 1 or later.
Virtual devices can also take advantage of a Windows Server Virtualization feature, named Enlightened I/O, for storage, networking and graphics subsystems, among others. Enlightened I/O is specialized virtualization-aware implementation of high level communication protocols like SCSI to take advantage of VM Bus directly, that allows bypassing any device emulation layer. This makes the communication more efficient, but requires the guest OS to support Enlightened I/O.
  • Xen    VMware

In virtualization, a virtual machine is something that pretends to be an entire machine but indeed exists only in the mind of the hypervisor. It has all the facilities of a real machine but there is no physical box associated with it. A single physical machine can be virtualized to create several virtual machines.
In interpreted languages, such as Java byte code, virtual machine refers to the made-up Instruction Set Architecture presented by the environment. The Java Virtual Machine is a stack-based ISA with knowledge of objects and number types, and Java applications are compiled to run on this architecture.
When talking about Xen, we often refer to a domain as a virtual machine. It shares the potentials of both of the definitions given above. Like in a fully virtualized system, it is an environment presented to operating systems where they would normally supposed to see a real machine. Unlike in a fully virtualized system, it does not have all the facilities of a real machine: Xen provides alternatives to some of the machine's capabilities instead of emulating them. As in the second definition, Xen is a made-up Instruction Set Architecture. Although Xen x86 has all of the user-mode features of native x86, and most of the kernel-mode features as well, it is not exactly the same, so operating systems that wish to be run under Xen have to have their kernels ported to its architecture. This is a small cost, but it provides great performance gains over fully-virtualized systems.
Current developments in hardware support for virtualization mean that it will soon be possible to also run native OSes on Xen without modification.
  • ESX server

ESX Server is VMware’s flagship enterprise server virtualization platform.  It comes in two versions ESX Server and ESXi Server where the latter has no service console and is the thinnest version available. ESX Server has many optional features like V-Motion and VMHA (both discussed below) and some built-in features like the VMFS file system.  Most end users purchase VMware ESX Server with some set of optional features in a package called VMware Infrastructure. ESX Server is managed by the VMware Infrastructure Client. Its centralized management platform is called Virtual Center.

Current Situation:

TAFE Structure

TAFE has many buildings on site, each building is alphabetically ordered, we are focused on a particular building H. In building H there are six floors each floor has six labs with 17 computer including teachers computer, also each floor has different other class rooms. We assume total no of computer is 612
C:\Users\Sabin\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\INetCache\Content.Word\desktop.jpg

The above classroom environment explains how the system is divide per classroom. Each switch from a classroom is connected to the server located in the basement.

The server room consists of 6 servers 1 for each floor. It is directly connected to the switches of each classroom as shown in the bottom figure.

As you can see in above pictures old desktop are used which have a rigid processor same hard disk same RAM for you to upgrade you need to buy the hardware and not only that we also need to put a lot of manpower to change the hardware.
With our new environment the all of this can be done by a single click. Virtualisation is in its peak era which makes our life much simpler and is easier to handle.

Planning Process Group

  • Process management plan

Building G in Ultimo TAFE consist of 6 floors. In this 6 floors there are 6 classrooms in each floors and each classroom consists of 17 desktop. We will bring our best 20 technicians who will be working on weekdays 8 hours per day to finish the whole installation of V-box. We will work 3-4 days in a particular classroom. The completion of the project will be 3 months. Completion date may vary on constraints.

  • Scope management

We have divided this project in 4 different parts, which consists of buying V-box and equipment’s for installation, Initiation of project in TAFE (installing the computers), software installation in the V-box and the servers, finalizing project. The details of the scope is added with the project charter.
This project includes:
  • Development of a project management plan for offering server VM and storage services to
TAFE.
  • Development of VM and storage service capacity planning targets for initial TAFE offering.
  • Development of VM and storage service capacity planning estimates for future demand.
  • Development of data centre capacity planning and upgrade estimates
  • Establishment of a VM service strategy and a support mechanism.
  • Establishment of an IT governance structure (this may be accomplished in conjunction with other shared services projects and the new TAFE governance framework).
  • Selection of a VM platform (e.g., vSphere, Hyper-V)
  • Selection of a service host/provider. Potential sources include CIS and 3rd party vendors
(e.g., rack space, Amazon, etc.).
  • Hardware and software procurement, installation and configuration.

Problem/Opportunity Statement

Every year new technology has changed and it required regular updates, it is very expensive process to upgrade system on regular bases. The hardware also required new versions of the software. In addition to the high costs of replacing desktop computers on regular basis, these computers had to be rebuilt every now on then in order to include newer versions of software, rebuilding each computer in the section required considerable man hours , This resulted in increased total cost of ownership (TCO).
To evaluate a project, organizations typically look at both the size of the project’s Return on Investment and the time required for benefits form a project to surpass the project’s costs.

Critical Assumptions and constraints

List of constraints

When the procedure of any project is being used to complete there are certain constrains that our team must deal with. This is something that is to be expected. The three constraints of project management are cost, time and scope.
  • Duration of project- the project should complete in six month,
  • Budget of project - Estimated cost of the project should not exceed $600,000. Project cost estimated between $400,000-$600,000
  • Scope – the goal of the object should achieve once the project complete. The project should meet its quality to provide a better education system with less operation cost.

List of Assumptions

  • Network solution will not install any new monitor, new key board or new mouse. It is assume that most of the wiring will be used as it is. Some extra wiring will be done by network solution if required.
  • The project will be completed using tools and techniques prescribed by the Network solution company.
  • Assumption is the during the project period the NSW Govt. policy will not change in regards to e-recycle. Network Solution will do e-recycle all unused wire and equipment’s.
  • It is assume that the equipment supplier until this project complete will be in the market and will not frequently change the prices of product.

Schedule management

The project will commence as soon as the approval of the budget form the stakeholders. In the first two week all the hardware and the equipment’s will be purchased and after all the purchase is done   all our 20 technicians will start installing V-box in the classrooms, a floor at a time and they will be monitored by trusted supervisor. One floor should be completed within 2 weeks including the software’s. At the end of every week our supervisor will make a detailed report of the progress of the project to us, which will be provide to you at the start of the week. If there is any constraints we will ensure that it will be dealt with in not more than 3 working days and make sure the project runs as smooth as possible. For variances on executive milestones greater than 10%, we may choose to use guidance specified by Capital Planning and Investment Control

Cost management

The estimate of the whole project cost estimate will be around $400,000 – $600,000 and as we plan on changing each desktop with MWave Intel Everyday NUC. Aside from staff effort, there are no direct and indirect costs associated with this project. The comparison of different licencing for different platforms are in the picture below

Stake Holders

Stakeholders represent people or groups of people who have project interest, involvement, or influence or will be impacted. The stakeholder analysis chart identifies TAFE stakeholder groups along with their level of power and interest. Most groups fall into one of four quadrants, which provides advice on how to manage expectations during project planning and execution.
C:\Users\bpc\Desktop\stakeholders.JPG

Near the point of origin is the lowest significance of stakeholders. As further we go from the point of origin the priority increases and they are to be acknowledge about the development of the project. The governance committee are to be managed meticulously and are to be given weekly reports. The directors and department heads are to be satisfied according to their needs. The networks, compliance are to be monitored prudently. At last the data centre managers and help desks are to be informed about the development of the project.

Preliminary project design

Initiating

The study for the project has start in this phase. The idea for virtualization has carefully examined to determine whether it will benefit to TAFE. In this phase decision making team will identify if the TAFE project is can realistically be completed.as we know once this project complete its will definitely benefits to TAFE. In this phase Network Solution will be starting the project with the preparation of a project charter and identification of stakeholders. If required by the sponsor Network Solution will be providing any needy documents for the project.

Planning

A project plan, project charter and scope may be put in writing, outlining the work to be performed. During this phase Network solution team prioritize the project, also calculate the budget which is in between $400,000 to $600,000. Also determine what resources are needed for the project. Network solutions will prepared Work break down structure, GANTT charts and milestone chart in this phase.

Execution

After the above steps it’s time for execution. In this phase all the resources will be distribute among teams and assign their responsibility. Documents will be sharing and there will be collaboration with team members.

Management and control

In this phase execution and controlling occur simultaneously. It also measures the project performance and progression with the project management plan. It also check with the project scope and calculate the time and cost. Any adjustment of schedule can be done in this phase if necessary to keep the project on track.

Closing

At this phase the project is formally closed. In this phase there are some important tasks includes like delivery, relieving resources, rewards and recognition to the team members.
